Maryland lawmakers outline package to support child care

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland lawmakers have outlined a package of measures to support child-care providers, who have struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lawmakers from the House and Senate held a joint video conference on Thursday to talk about the measures. In the last two years, they say more than 750 providers have been forced to close. The package includes grants to attract and retain providers, as well as loans for capital expansions for facilities.

House Speaker Adrienne Jones said helping child-care providers is critical to addressing the shortage of workers in the state and the nation.
