ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A Maryland panel has voted to recommend a new congressional map for state lawmakers to consider in a special session.

Six state legislators voted along party lines Tuesday evening, with four Democrats supporting it and two Republicans opposing it. Democrats say the recommendation creates more compact and contiguous districts for Maryland’s eight U.S. House seats. But the two Republicans who opposed the recommended map say it doesn’t go far enough to address gerrymandering that now exists.

The map will be submitted to the Maryland General Assembly, which is scheduled to hold a special session to consider it next month.
